Welcome to the Virginia Room!

Located at the Main Library in Downtown Roanoke, the Virginia Room holds the Libraries’ non-circulating historical and genealogical research resources. We are committed to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and making available materials of the Roanoke Valley and the Commonwealth of Virginia (and some material from states closely tied to Virginia through births, immigration, migration, or boundary.)

New Book - The Roanoke Valley in the 1940s

In collaboration with the Roanoke Public Library Foundation, local author and historian Nelson Harris has written a new book on the Roanoke Valley in the 1940’s. With years of research and thousands of newspapers and other resources scoured, this book contains invaluable information about life and happenings in the Roanoke Valley in a time period not covered by many books on Roanoke history. There are also over 300 photographs featuring life in the area in the ’40’s!

Copies are available now at any library in the City of Roanoke ($75.00, cash or check.) Contact the Virginia Room for further information!

Digital Collection

The Virginia Room maintains a large collection of digitized photographs, articles, yearbooks, and oral histories.

Tips for a great trip to the Virginia Room!

    • Give us a call 540-853-2073 or email virginiaroom@gmail.com before your visit - if you let us know what you're interested in we may be able to pull some items for you in advance. This will save you valuable research time!
    • Parking can be limited near the Main Library and is primarily 2-hour street parking.  2-hour parking is not enforced on Saturdays. If you would like to avoid parking near the Library altogether, you may consider parking elsewhere and riding the Star Line Trolley. The Trolley stops at a number of parking garages and other destinations in and around downtown Roanoke and runs every 10-15 minutes from 7AM-7PM, Monday-Friday.
    • Visitors to the Virginia Room will be asked to secure any bags in provided lockers. We will give you a key - you'll hold on to that key until you leave, allowing you to grab anything out of the locker you wish. We do not allow eating or drinking in the Virginia Room, so keep that in mind when deciding what to bring with you!
