A Guide to the Charles T. Burton Collection

This Charles T. Burton Collectionconsists of 16 record storage boxes and 1 legal-sized document storage case. The collection is divided into three series:
• Series I consists of surname files arranged alphabetically. The majority contain genealogical information researched for Burton’s clients. The files in Series I were working files and often contain the correspondence between Burton and his clients as well as any information and documents he located in his research. In some cases, there is more than one file for a particular surname. In cases where duplicate surname files belong to the same unit, folders were numbered (ex. Agee folder 1 of 2). Some files contain more than one surname and are arranged beginning with the first surname
in Burton’s arrangement scheme. Burton also kept separate family group sheets on a number of surnames, which are filed alphabetically after respective surname files.
• Series II consists of files arranged by geographic location. Files in this series may contain historical information on specific places and/or courthouse records from a specific area. The files are arranged as kept by Burton.
• Series III consists of files arranged alphabetically by document type. Files in Series III contain publications, news clippings, photographs, etc. that were not included within Series I or Series III. The files are arranged as kept by Burton.
Much of the information in this collection focuses on people and places in Botetourt County and Southwest Virginia. Burton cited sources and included copies of records with his research. The bulk of Burton’s research was compiled from the 1960s through
