SENIOR CLASS rtISTORY
History is a ir.atter of cause and effect .
Causes are often obscure and effe~ ts are diffi c u lt to determine . Ne~ert~eless, h i gh school
life has been a great cause in rraking our class
what it is today .
Four l ong , "short" years ago , 84 rats crawled
from holes in all parts of the county and en rolled as the Freshman class of Troutville High
School s During that year , vrn cecame pals and
star ted. a cla s s a.rgam.izc-:..tian which has continu ed
a ll through these ye-ars .
As Scphomo.r e s , \"!e f e 1 t the impor tance of be ing c al le d " upp er c l assme n" and p.ushe d f orwa r d
wi t h more vigcr than b efo1~e -- cne st e p nearer
the ~nal goal seemed to n:ake the d.eterminati0n
stronge r .
Ir~ September , 1936, vie found a.ur selves in
the Junior ro0:m , a suri:risiDng (to sc..r:-1e a.f us )
and a v~ry pleasant discovery . We were still
bubbling with en t hus i asm and ttr,ied t o ir.eet a.ur
obligations as rare apportunities. The one out standing event of the year was the Junior - Secior
banquet , a delightfu l oc c asion long to be rcn:embered by us.
No~ we have reache d the closing act cf our
high sch ool drama . We feel that we have accc~
plished s oir.ething not unly in the lessons we have·
learned from b ooks , but also in t~e lessons taught
u s by living and working with others. These are
the t hings that will help us ff,ost· in shapdir~g our
lives .
During the four ye ar s of high school, our
class has been well repres e nted in all school
activities . We have had winners in athletic and
literary events and have a lways had a large num..:.
ber in musical eve nts .
The c l ass of 1 9 38 ~ oncludes its history wit~ .
this wo rd of appreciation. We are i~debted fer
mar.y of our honors to the students who have joined our class since our Freshman year, To the
fu tur e, we look wi th hopeful eyes. As a cla ss,
we disband, but we shal l never forget those from
VJhorr, and v1ith 'llho1~ vie hai.-c learned, Now we must
go forth from our Al ma :Mater into the 11 unc3:1-artercd
futur e , wit h the vmrds of our rr.o tto,
I wi sh ,
I can , I will , 11 challenging us to li ve li \es of

The Troutville community built its first "high school" in 1905, a two-story, four room school. The first school burned in 1913, a new school was built that served as a combined elementary and high school until 1927. A new high school was constructed in 1927 and remained Troutville High School until 1959. Students in the community attended Lord Botetourt High School thereafter.
