George C. Davis Photograph Collection of Frank Ewald
Description
An account of the resource
George C. Davis Photographs in this collection are digital copies of owned and acquired by Frank Ewald. All Davis images can be dated circa 1904-1968. There are images with Davis' signature that predate 1904, but they are believed to have been taken by Chandler Studio, the photography firm bought out by Davis in 1904. Although the majority of Davis' images are marked with his signature in the lower right corner, it is important to note that not all of the images are marked. Davis rarely recorded identifying information on the images. For this reason, many of his images are unidentifiable. The majority of images from the Davis Collection seen on this database are street scenes, businesses and points of interest in Roanoke and its vicinity where it was possible to at least minimally identify them.

Underwood Aerial Photographs
Description
An account of the resource
The following photographs are a series of black and white aerial images of the City of Roanoke and vicinity. The images were taken by Underwood & Underwood photographers in October 1924 for the Roanoke Railway and Electric Company. The images were originally bound in book format entitled, Aerial View of Roanoke and Vicinity Made for Roanoke Railway and Electric Company. Images include local industries, such as the Norfolk & Wesstern railway shops and yards, American Viscose, and Roanoke Railway and Electric Company. Of special interest are photographs of local neighborhoods, high schools and colleges. Images in the collection are 8"x10". Due to the deterioration of the photographs, the images were removed from the binding and placed in polyethylene sleeves. The number of each image corresponds to its order within the bound volume.
