SR148 Post Office
The construction of a "new" Federal post office on Main Street was a saga of many years. Land purchased by the government in 1917 went undeveloped until 1922 when construction finally commenced. The post office officially opened in June of 1923.

Davis 55.72 Capture of Sidna Allen and Wesley Edwards
Capture and jail transport of Sidney Allen and Wesley Edwards. Both men were members of the infamous Allen clan that opened fire on the Carroll County Courthouse in 1912 and subsequently led Baldwin-Felts Detective Agents (of Roanoke, VA) on a multi-state search. The men were temporarily housed in Roanoke's jail until they could be transported to Carroll County for trail. Men identified in picture: Ernest G. Baldwin (seated next to driver), Billy Baldwin (center, with hat pushed back), W.G. Baldwin, Sr. (seated in rear of car), Sidna Allen and Wesley Edwards (standing in rear of the car). Car sits in front of 2nd Federal Post office on the northeast corner of Church and 1st street.
