Completed in 1883 by the Shenandoah Valley Railroad, the general office building housed the offices for Norfolk & Western after they were moved from Lynchburg. The building was located on the northwest corner of Jefferson Street and Shenandoah Avenue where the present "old" general offices are located. The building was destroyed by fire on January 4, 1896.

Aerial view of Blue Ridge Industrial Park between Brandon Avenue and Shenandoah Avenue. The park is now located on Aerial Way Drive. Brandon Avenue is the road bisecting the lower portion of the photo. Roanoke Electric Steel can be seen above the railroad tracks at right. Also visible in the lower half of the photo are the Allstate building, the Candlelight Club, RayPhil's Swim Club, and Reid and Cutshall Furniture Wayside. The Olympic Diner and tourist cabins are located across Brandon Avenue from Reid and Cutshall's in the trees.
