Roanoke Valley in the 1940s Photograph Collection
Description
An account of the resource
The photographs in this collection are a result of Roanoke Valley in the 1940s by Nelson Harris published in 2020. With years of research and thousands of newspapers and other resources scoured, this book contains invaluable information about life and happenings in the Roanoke Valley during this decade. Many of the photographs were provided by individuals and organizations. Not all of the photographs contained here are included in the book. Likewise, not all of the photographs are from the 1940s.

Description
An account of the resource
Herman Richard Clark was a photographer with his own studio, Clark Studios, that focused on commercial and portrait photography. Ranging from the late 1940's to the early 1970's, he primarily captured prominent local African American socialites, organizations, schools, churches, and social activities that reflected the vibrancy of the community. Most of the photographs feature Clark Studio's official stamp on the back. However, the majority of those in his images have not been identified due to the lack of identifying information accompanied with the collection.

An account of the resource
Henry Fink, president of N&W from 1895 until 1902, was the chief operating officer for Mahone's AM&O Railroad. A life-long bachelor, Fink had immigrated to the United States with his brother in 1851 and became a railroad engineer four years later. While N&W president, Fink often directed the railway's activities from his New York office. Though providing N&W steady leadership, Fink made one significant error in judgment; he saw little future in coal. During a visit to the Norfolk division in 1895, his superintendents pleaded for him to approve sidings and storage tracks for more coal traffic. Fink reportedly replied, "What would we do with coal when we got it down here?" No one will buy it. And none of us can eat it. Wait awhile."

A young apprentice would work a 10 hour day and often overtime on weekends. The apprenticeships opened doors of opportunity for later railroad employee and/or college admissions.

Description
An account of the resource
A foreman gauges track to make certain the distance between the rails is exactly 4 feet, 8 inches. In 1883, the N&W operated primarily on a 5-foot gauge; however, on June 1, 1886, the N&W and other southern railroads adopted the now-standard gauge of 4 feet, 8 1/2 inces. At daybreak on June 1, the N&W ceased all freight and passenger train operations and labor gangs began respiking the rails. By early afternoon, the job was complete. It is estimated that the N&W and other southern railroads changed 11,000 miles of track that day. One N&W historian noted that this was the single, greatest one-day change ever to occur in the history of the railroad.

Description
An account of the resource
The Davis Photographic Records contain approximately 12,200 black and white images, negatives, glass plate negatives and glass lantern slides. Black and white prints vary in size between 5"x7", 8"x10" and various oversized prints; 8"x10" glass plate negatives; 5"x7" and 8"x10" negatives; 3"x5" glass lantern slides. All Davis images can be dated circa 1904-1968. There are images with Davis' signature that predate 1904, but they are believed to have been taken by Chandler Studio, the photography firm bought out by Davis in 1904. Although the majority of Davis' images are marked with his signature in the lower right corner, it is important to note that not all of the images are marked. Davis rarely recorded identifying information on the images. For this reason, many of his images are unidentifiable. The majority of images from the Davis Collection seen on this database are street scenes, businesses and points of interest in Roanoke and its vicinity where it was possible to at least minimally identify them. While the Virginia Room has a large number of portraits from Davis' collection, they are not represented here. An index of all identified portraits is available in the Virginia Room.
