W.P. Hunter Memorial at Hunter Viaduct. The inscription reads, "Hunter Memorial Bridge in grateful memorial of William Pearce Hunter; May 29, 1884 - March 13, 1956; first city manager, October 1, 1918 - December 31, 1947; member City Council, 1948-1952; Mayor, 1948-1949; His life was dedicated to good government and the welfare of Roanoke. As a pioneer in the field of city management, he adapted a new system and made it work. His faithful service has left an imperishable mark on the City's well-being and is engraved in the hearts of its people."

SR150 Andrew Lewis Monument
One of the most notable citizens in the region’s early history was General Andrew Lewis. Though Lewis died before the town of Salem was officially plotted by James Simpson, his life was spent in its general vicinity. This monument was erected in East Hill Cemetery.

SR014 J.H. Marsteller
J.H. Marsteller created ornate marble monuments and headstones. This card was produced for Marsteller in 1907, showing on the left the exhibit of Marsteller at the 1907 Jamestown Exhibition’s Timber and Mineral Building. The image on the right shows Marsteller’s place of business in Roanoke on 21 Campbell Avenue SE, which was built in 1897 as the left half of the building with the right half and additional third floor being added in 1905. It was sold to Nelson Hardware in 1916. In the 1960’s it was the Gulf Mills Discount Department Store. It has since been razed for the Market Square parking garage and Orvis store.

"Grave of Gen. Andrew Lewis, East Hill Cemetery, Salem, Virginia. One of the early settlers in Virginia was General Andrew Lewis, pioneer hero of the Battle of Point Pleasant. In 1767, he was allotted a grant of land consisting of 625 acres and from this territory the town of Salem was later laid out."
