DEDICATION

We the Senior Class of 1966, as a token of our a pp rec iation
would like to dedicate our edition of the "Eyrie" to Mr . Denzi I

L. Barker. His generosity in the giving of his time, his understanding, his interest in our problems, and his valuable knowledge are
but a few qualities of his outstanding personality.
He has served, since the opening of Staunton River High School,
as assistant principal, athletic director, guidance counselor, and
teacher. In all of these positions, held simultaneously, he has
given long hours and hard work to make this an outstanding
school.
He has always been there

wh~n

we needed him, and his

guidance has meant a great deal to all of us during the past
three years . To honor him for his dedication to his school and
his students, we dedicate our annual to Mr . Denzil L. Barker.

PRINCIPA L'S MESSAGE
In today's modern world education is essential if we are to make ourselves physically fit, mentally alert, morally straight, and socially acceptable . We must accept this challenge in order to
better t he society in which we live . Each of us must assume this responsibility for the good of all
mankind .
I hope that this year has been a most meaningful one for you, and that you have thought, selected, and acted wisely in making the decisions which affect your future . As this year comes to
an end, I would like to leave you with this thought-Do as much as you can, for as many as you
can , for as long as you can.
With best personal regards
I am

Owen L. Burks

ADMINIST RATION
..... .

u·

Staunton River has been very lucky in having an excellent
administration . Our Principal, Assistant Principal, Guidance
Counselor, Librarian, and all our teachers have played a
big part in our lives as students.
The friendliness and instruction of Mr. Burks, the work
of Mr. Barker as athletic director, the helpfulness and closeness of Mr. Gilley to all the students have made the school
year more enjoyable.
Miss Fannin, our librarian, and all of our teachers have
helped us with our work and made learning more of a
pleasure than a task.
Although we as Seniors will be leaving school, the influence of an excellent administration and faculty will ever
be present.

PARTICIP ANTS

This year has been an inspiration to the teachers and students .
The teachers have come to know their students better, to understand their problems, and they have received satisfaction from
seeing their students learn. The students have met new challenges,
solved new problems, and have come to understand themselves
better. This year has truly been a great experience for everyone.
One of the chief causes for this year's success has been the
feeling of unity between the students and faculty . They have
worked together and helped one another in any possible way .
The students have felt closer to their teachers, and a desire and
wi llingness to please them has helped them to achieve their
goals.
In looking back at the year 1965-66, we can surely see that it
was a high point in the history of Staunton River High School.

VARSITY
FOOTBALL
Staunton River's first varsity football season was
something less than a shattering success. Injuries, lack
of size and speed, and the biggest bugaboo-inexperience-were the major causes of that unspeakable horror-winless season. No one can say, however, that the
Golden Eagles lacked spirit; or that affairs were dull and
lifeless at the Golden Eagle Stadium . Down five and six
touchdowns at times, the Eagles were still capable of
scoring from anywhere on the field on any given play.
The defensive play, though often ineffectual, was dauntless from the standpoint of spirit and courage.
Dale Wilson led the team in scoring and finished high
in the district scoring race. Gordon Tinnell ' s passes to
Buddy Bolding (the team's choice for MVP) and W il son,
plus the hard running of Barry Lafon and Mike Ferguson,
kept enemy defenses honest and provided the explosive .
punch which proved to be such a crowd pleaser at games.
Always outmanned but never outgamed was the story
of the Eagle season. Coaches Hammond and Eckart hope
the spirit remains intact and the manpower increases for
the 1966 season .

Contribu tions o f these boys will be missed ne x t year.

The Varsity Football Cheerleaders shared
the fun and anguish of the '65 footbal I season . . . Cheering at football games was new
for most of them, but hard work at practice
created a field display which made Eagle fans
forget the scoreboard and join the "root-'emhome spirit ." There were rewards, too-the
cheering itself, the bus trips, the post-game
snacks, and parties-all reasons why most
girls enjoy cheerleading . The football cheerleaders also worked diligently on their float
which was a big portion of Staunton River's
contribution to the Bedford Christmas Parade.

The story of the Golden Eagles' basketbal I season was
lack of depth . Beyond the first five, Coach Tom Heath .
had little with which to substitute, leaving S. R. 's most
potent weapon-the fast break-somewhat stra ined at
game's end . All-D istrict IV ace, La r ry Mullins, was once
again the scoring leader for the team with a 19.4 average. Larry's graduation will be a new blow to an already
undermanned squad .
The Eagles had a few moments of glory in '65-66 . The
victory over Appomattox gave them a district w in, and
the overwhelm ing defeat of prev iously unbeaten Boonsboro, proved once and for all that the Golden Eagleswhatever-they were-were far above the level of even
the best Group 111 team . Moreove r, at season's end, the
Eagles played distr ict runner-up, Nelson County, to a
standstill, before succumbing . Throu ghout the long losing
streak the Golden Eagles never lost the spir it and determ ination of the season's start; dissension and apathy
were strangers to the locker-room .
Next year could bring better re s ults if Dale Wilson's
speed and Wayne Turner' s rebounding ability a long with
continued improvement by Barry Thomas, Allen Wainwright, and Danny Holdren can offset the loss of Mullins,
Leroy Saunders, and Gordon Tinnell .

VARSITYBASKETBALLCHEERLEADERS
Cheerleading has as its main objective the promotion of good sportsmanship and school spirit . Fulfilling these goals means the hours of practice,
the white and gold pressed uniforms , the white socks, laryngitis and the
everlasting smile . Staunton River's basketball cheerleading squad though
inex perienced at first, proved themselves capable of keeping the true mean ing of "spirit" alive in the hearts of athletes and spectators . . . . .

JUNIOR VA RSITY TEAM

EIGHTH GRADE TEAM

The JV season, like a year ago, was the old
story of sending an essentially freshmen team
against the sophomores of opposing schools .
Coach Hammond's boys always held their own
early in the game, but size and stamina we re
lacking at game's end in a league where officials do not confine body contact to the football field .
Danny Johnson and Neal Saunders, the only
sophomores , wi 11 be gone next year, but Robert
Hollins, Forrest Harkrader, and Karl Bates
would be the nucleus of a fine team unless

they a re moved up to the varsity to fi 11 the
ever-present gaps there .
Jerry Eckart's 8th grade boys complet ed a
fine season at 4 wins, 5 losses, conside ring
their diminuti ve size . Using speed and finesse
the mighty mites did e verything but run between the legs of their larger opponen t s . Determination and spirit could not overcome size
as far as providing a winning season , bu t
names like Mike Morgan , Eddie Zimmerman ,
Roger Wade, Jerry Brown, and Gary Dellis w ill
be heard from on future Eagle t eams.

THE PROM
"The leaves of Life keep falling one by one."
So wrote Omar Khayyan almost 900 years ago.
Certainly one of the most pleasant 'leaves' of
high school is the Junior-Senior Prom.
The class of 1965 was honored by the class
of 1966 in the biggest event of the school year
for Juniors and Seniors. Few will forget May 24,
1965 . This was the prom! The theme "In
the Misty Moonlight" inspired the conver-

sion of the gym into a paradise . As each couple walked through the door, their eyes beheld
a mystic panorama of silver stars sway ing
gently overhead; multi-colored flowers on each
wall; and a bridge across a rippling brook into
a dancer's garden with mural facade . When
the music began, the dance floor became a
floating collage of rhythm and color, weaving
each dancer in a spel I lasting much longer than
the evening itself.

"Memories in Gold"

A Ring Dance holds many memories .

RING DANCE
November 6, 1965 was a big night for the Seniors . The time had
finally come for us to receive our rings. Our theme, "Memories in Gold,"
is smybolic of what our rings mean to us . We had waited so long to get
them, and it seemed impossible that we 'd get them that night . As we
eagerly awaited the presentation of our rings we danced to the music
of the Rivettes . While everyone was dancing the long anticipated announcement come . It was t ime to receive our rings from Mr . Burks . As
the names were being called, a hush fell over the group and each of us
hoped to be the next name called, so we could rece ive our memories in
gold . We knew too we had established a traditional ceremony at which
future seniors would receive their rings.

" .. . as soon a s it's over!"
There's no name in this one .
