Text Any textual data included in the document When I was 13, back in 1963, hiked up to Mill Mountain Playhouse and it was a lot of playing going on with all inside and out. Volunteered to serve hot coffee with fatty doughnuts. Not realize when the last act was over it was totally dark. So my cousins that lived at the bottom and I hiked the old road in the dark with lots of sounds of wildlife. When people asked me in Roanoke, VA where were you born? My answer would be "under the star." In the cold winter night my cousins, eight including me, would hike to the top and ride our bikes down with flashlight taped to the handlebars. In the middle of the nights we would hike to the star and run after baby owls not knowing mother was right behind us. Lesson learned: owls fly with noise or sound. Text Any textual data included in the document My Star Story starts way back in the late 1980s- around 1986 when I was 16 yrs old and used to cruise Williamson Rd. Many a night after cruising was spent at the Star for a romantic kiss with a love interest or playing Hide-and-Seek in total darkness at the Wildflower Garden. In my early 20s, a date took me to the star and he actually climbed about halfway up the star before deciding he better make his way down. But my most significant Star Story was in 2013 when a man who I used to know as a teenager cruising Williamson Rd. (but had never dated - he claims to have had a major crush on me but was too shy to approach me) connected with me over the internet. Our first date was a family date - me and my 2 sons along with him and his son went skating in Jan. of 2013. That night he asked me out for a date "just the 2 of us." After a nice dinner at Ichiban and before seeing "Jack Reacher" at the movie theatre, he took me up to the star. This man was the perfect gentleman and so sweet to me. It was a cold, clear winter night and the view was beautiful and I was cold. He put his arms around me to keep me warm and I eagerly anticipated that "first kiss". Alas, that did not happen until the movie theatre. He proposed to me on Valentine's Day and I happily was ready to take that chance on true love. I could not find a setting for the wedding that inspired me and was ready to elope. On a trip with my boys and Mom to the zoo, we walked through the Wildflower Garden and I came upon the perfect place to marry my dream man. We were married that September in the Wildflower Garden below the Star and had our reception in the covered shelter. It was the most beautiful and magical day. We had wedding pictures at the Star. And this amazing man, Paul Guard, Jr, became my husband. Fast forward to today, 9-4-16, 3 years later and here we are on the eve of our 3rd anniversary- up at the Star enjoying Starcropolis as my anniversary surprise to him. Every time we drove past Roanoke, the Star called to me, and I said to myself, "When I grow up I want to live there!" Wasn't really sure what "the press" was but he told me, as president of the Roanoke Merchants Association, they had decided to turn the star off for the first time since it was permanently turned on. I thought it was really sad and a bad idea - why turn the star off!? He explained we were in the middle of a severe energy crisis (70s) - the same problem that caused mom an hour wait to get gas. Text Any textual data included in the document My mother, Lois McConnell remembers visiting her sister at about 6yrs (about 1930) and riding the incline from the bottom of MIll Mountain to the top and back. There was no star at the time, but a lookout and trails and a park to enjoy. As a teenager, I went to the Mill Mountain Theater for productions often, usually on dates. So much fun! I decided that any city crazy enough to put a neon star on top of a mountain is my kind of place! So back when we got the 1st super big snowfall after I became a Roanoker (19 inches), the 1st thought in my mind was to see how the star looked with lots of snow. People were having snowball fights and, of course, I joined in. I even got a picture of a small snowplow clearing the overlook. I love being a Roanoke Star !!! My first hike after I moved to Roanoke was on the Star Trail. When I got to the top, I called my son (still living in FL) and told him to go to the Roanoke city website that shows people on the overlook at the star. I waved at him as we talked on the phone. They were very excited, speaking quickly amongst themselves and taking (I's not exaggerating) hundreds of photos. Finally, the translator approached. Text Any textual data included in the document My wife's parents divorced when she was less than two years old. Both her father and mother remarried quickly, and she has two sets of half-brothers, whom do not really know one another. One of her brothers from her father's second marriage visited us a few times with the woman he was dating. One evening they told us they'd like a little time to themselves and were going for a while. When they came back, she was wearing an engagement ring, which he had presented to her up at the Mill Mountain Star. A few years later, one of her brothers from her mother's second marriage called and asked if he and his girlfriend could come over for a weekend, as they had done a few times already. We knew they really enjoyed visiting Roanoke, so we told them they were welcome to stay at our house, but we would be out of town ourselves. Sure enough, they got engaged up at the star that weekend. Although they both live in Frederick County, Maryland, they still don't really know each other, having met only a couple of times. But both of their homes feature artwork of the Roanoke icon, the Mill Mountain Star. I cried on my first run. While in college, I worked on a research project for the Roanoke Times. We interviewed a random sampling of citizens throughout the city. One question we asked was about the Star - should it stay or go. The passion people felt about out very namesake was incredible. Finally, I travel a lot for work. City "Today Show" the host Dave Garroway and his chimpanzee - J.Fred Muggs were the invited celebrities for the show which was televised under the star. At that time I was a Radford College student in the Highlander Band. we also were invited to participate. Well, J. Fred Muggs got loose up into the trees which caused a scare. He was soon caught (I don't remember how). I always thought why the chimp wasn't tethered. It was only natural for him to head for the trees. Against her mother's wishes, they would drive to Roanoke for late dates at the star. They married soon after, a young love that deepened over the years. When it turned different colors my mom and dad would explain what the different colors meant when I was young. My husband, 47 years ago this coming August, ask me to marry him as we sat at the star!!! So this star has wonderful memories for me! I have pictures of this star all around my house.
