German
The German Language Club, which is affiliated
with the National Federation of Students of German, was organized to promote interest in the
language, literature, history , and culture of the
German people. Membership in the club is open
to any regularly enrolled student in the German
classes.
After th e official club business is complet ed, only
German is spoken during the rest of the mee tings.
Club activi ties vary fro m the presentation of German movies to playing German word games, group
discussions, et c. Th e club 's community project,
prese nt ing hand-puppet shows for th e children of
the Roanoke Valley, was very successful.
Members of th e club publish a monthly German
language newspaper. Th e name of the paper is
"Der Fortschri tt," whi ch means " Progress," and
that's what the German Language Club wants to
mak e.

We at Roanoke Tech feel indebtedness to
Mr. Roy C. Herrenkohl, dedicated civic leader,
without whose effort Tech's arrival might have
been delayed.
We are especially grateful for his untiring
effort and his contim1ed interest. With fore sight and optimism, Mr. Herrenkohl has championed "our cause" since 1953 in an effort to
co-ordinate civic, business, and industrial support in order to bring Tech to Roanoke.
His leadership and determination were an
inspiration to all who worked with him.

engineers speak at Branch meetings and to take fie ld trips to nearby firms and manufacturers
of electronic equipment. These talks and trips usually serve to emphasize in a concrete manner,
the theory of electricity and electronics the student studies in the classroom .
The student member of the I.E.E.E. is further aided in his quest for knowledge by the
STUDENT JOURNA L published by the parent organization strictly for students. This magazine
features articles both of the technical and nontechnical nature written by men who are experts
in their field. Papers of general interest prepared by qualified students are a l so published.

FOREW ORD
These are the horizons that face us if we gaze from the windov1s of Roanoke Technical Institute; however the Class of 1964 has far greater horizons awaiting it upon graduation. Our
future is indeed unlimited.
Roanoke Technical Institute has grown as we have grown over the two short years here.
We,theClassof1964,have seen the advancement made by our school and it' s administration and
we have had the pleasure of being an integral part of this advancement.
Now we advance toward our personal horizons in three distinct steps; the assimilation of
theoretical knowledge from our instructors, the acquisition of practical knowledge through the
performance of laboratory experiments, and finally - the most important aspect in the realization
of our goals - the attainment of the elusive ability to work and live in this world with our fellow
man.
This, then, is the story of our hopes, our advancements , and our futur es .

ADMINISTRATION

DEDICATION

During our two years at Roanoke T ech there stands out in the minds of t he Seniors
one man who has been both an instructor and a friend to the students. During his three
short years here he organized a Student Branch of the IE E E, and a chapter of TAU
ALPHA PI, National Honor Society. He has been instrumental in setting up a curricu l um

we believe second to none.
We dedicate this the 1964 Technician to you - Mr. Harry C. Race.

DANA B. HAMEL, Ph.D., Ed. D.
Professor and Director of the Institute
A.B., Ashland, 1951
M.A., Ohio State, 1952
Ph. D., Ohio State, 1955
Ed. D., Cincinnati, 1962

Under the capable leadership of Dr. Dana Hamel, Roanoke
Technical Institute has advanced to a respected member of the
community. He is unceasing in his efforts to bring the name,
Roanoke Tech., before the entire valley . If he is not behind his
desk he is very likely behind a rostrum, speaking on the aspects
and rewards of Roanoke Tech.
To you, Dr. Hamel, we offer our thanks for the interest you
take in Roanoke Tech. and in each student.

PENNY MCKAUGHAN

A warm thanks goes to both Miss Louise
Clendenen and Mrs. Penny McKaughan. They
have done an excellent job in maintaining the
administration office. In addition to their regular duties, they also conduct a lost and found
department and an "information booth".

We at Roanoke Tech feel a particular indebted ness to Mr. Roy C . Herrenkohl, dedicated civic
leader, without whose effort T ech' s arrival might
have been delayed.
We are especially grateful for his untiring
effort and his continued interest. With foresight
and optimism, Mr. Herrenkohl has championed "our
cause" since 1953 in an effort to co-ordinate civic,
business, and industri al support in order to bring
Tech to Roanoke.
His leadership and determination were an inspiration to all who worked with him.

The members of I. E.E.E. Student Branch at Roanoke Tech be long to the l argest engineering society in the world. There are over 27,000 student members.
The Student Branch of I.E .E.E. does not supplement, nor does it supplant studies, but
rather it serves to enhance education.

..

46

One of the important functions of l.E. E.E. is the continuing education of its members, by
technical meetings on local and national levels and by journals.
T he members of the Student Branch receive these benefits plus the opportunity to have
local engineers speak at Branch meetings and to take field trips to nearby firms and manufacturers of electronic equipment. These talks and trips usually serve to emphasize in a concrete
manner, the theory of electricity and electronics the student studies in the classroom.
The student member of the I.E.E.E. is further aided in his quest for knowledge by the STUDENT JOURNAL published by the parent organization strictly for students. This magazine features articles both of the technical and nontechnical nature written by men who are experts in
their field. Papers of general interest prepared by qualified students are also published.

ASPIRING TO REACH HIGHER GOALS

2

In an atomic age where men have long since reached
an end to geographical pioneering and where, indeed, the
new horizons reach out to the moon, there remains (on
earth) but the challenge to meet new frontiers on an educational plane - to seek new levels of knowledge, new heights
of achievement.

In this light then, the state of Virginia, Roanoke Technical Institute, and especially the Class of 1963, are pioneers
in the true sense for they, each in turn and as an integral
unit, have engaged in a pioneering program of educational
endeavor - a venture which holds promise for those who
follow. As in all new efforts, the way is not always smooth.
But, like true pioneers, new ideas are tried; new methods
are invented.

This, then, is their story; their struggles, their hopes,
their achievements.

MR JAMES E. McVEAN
Director

The passing of a bill in 1958 by the legislature of the state
of Virginia created a state institution of higher learning, but
only in theory. In order to become a reality, this enactment
would require the initiative of an administrator combined with
the ability of an educator. Some men in the teaching profession
excel in one or the other of these fields. Rare, indeed, is the
man who possesses both of these qualities. The search was
long, the qualifications demanding.
Fortunately, such a man was found. In February, 1961,
James E. Mcvean was appointed director of the proposed
college which was to be a branch institution of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. His was the task of creating an institution
with an educational program little heard of and, as yet, untried
in this state . . . the two year program of specialization in the
engineering technologies. Bringing with him an avid interest
and a knowledge of the value of this type of education, and an
experience born of association and participation, he was equal
to the task.
Mr. McVeangraduated from Canton Ag. and Tech. Institute
in 1941, earnedtheB.E.E. degree at Clarkson College of Technology in 1948, and the M.S. degree at Cornell University in
1953.
To you, Mr. James E. Mcvean, leader, teacher, and friend,
we, the first graduating class of Roanoke Technical Institute
proudly and gratefully dedicate this first volume of THE
TECHNICIAN.

We at Roanoke Tech feel a particular indebtedness to Mr. Roy C. Herrenkohl, dedicated civic
leader, without whose effort Tech' s arrival might
long have been delayed.
We are especially grateful for his untiring
effort and his continued interest. With foresight
and optimism, Mr. Herrenkohl has championed
"our cause" since 1953 in an effort to coordinate
civic, business, and industrial support in order
to bring Tech to Roanoke.
His leadership and determination were an
inspiration to all who worked with him.

Under the guidance and leadership of Mr. Mcvean the Institute
has experienced steady growth and
is receiving wide recognition.

Through foresight, dedication, and diligent hard work,
the faculty has grown into a smooth operating team whose
duties are varied but coordinated to create and establish
an atmosphere for learning.
Their patience and wisdom guide us in our education;
their enthusiasm and knowledge are invaluable in gaining
an insight into the mystifying and elusive areas of learning.

STUDENT COUNCIL
Very early in the life of the new school, the need for some form of student government
became apparent. As time went by, and the students faced, or sometimes created new
"problems", the widening gap between the student body and administration was evident.
Someone implanted the idea of government and self discipline among the students. Soon,
several leaders emerged, and Tech' s embryo student governing body was formed. This
interim committee composed of Ed Boyer, Lane Craig, Sam Guzman, Jimmy Layman,
and Guy Sparks, was elected and empowered by the student body to act as a study group
to determine the best type of government suitable for the group. Soon, with the very
capable suggestions of Colonel Thomas I. Edgar, faculty advisor, the committee completed the study and presented its conclusions and a finished constitution to the student
body for consideration. Shortly afterwards, the document was ratified unanimously at a
special assembly of the student body.
The acting committee immediately set about conducting an election to determine the
officers of the newly formed government as called for by the constitution.
In an interesting, well disciplined election, attended by the entire student body, the
following students were chosen as officers of the STUDENT COUNCIL, the governing
committee of the student body: Samuel M. Guzman, President; Jimmy N. Layman, Vice
P r esident; Barry Brown, Secretary; and Darryl Dellis, Treasurer.

At one of its first organizational
meetings, the Student Council cone e iv e d and · formed a working
mo de 1 of an Honor System. A
special committee was appointed
to insure its operation.

Jame s Roberts on, Clarence Tarpley, Roy
Griggs, Jimmy Layman, and Sam Gu z man,
Chairman.

At a general meeting early in the
year, the seniors decided, by majority
vote, to have class rings made. A special
committee was appointed to furnish a
design. Jerry Johnston, Gary Spiers, and
Roy Griggs did the original work on the
design.

Roanoke Tech, again in a pioneering spirit aimed at promoting and encouraging high
standards and ideals, has instituted a State Chapter of TAU ALPHA PI, a national organization devoted to the recognition of high scholastic achievement and service.
Membership in Tau Alpha Pi is by invitation, and is limited to those in the top four
per cent of the Senior class.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Charter members : Barry Brown, Ron Bryant, Roy Griggs,
Tom Brogan, and Sam Guzman.

In an effort to record and
reproduce a historical event
verbally, much is lost in the
telling. Therefore, some of
the events and activities which
took place during that time
when the do o r s of Roanoke
Tech first opened have been
lost forever.

Mr. H. C. Quinn, faculty advisor; Sam Guzman, editor.

Theyearbook staff, however, has spent many long hours of extremely satisfying work
in an attempt to present to the student body a complete pictorial and written coverage,
commensurate with the size of the book and available information, of the events and personalities that made up the 1962 - 1963 school year.

YEARBOOK STAFF
Standing are Sam Guzman, John Lenzi, Boyd Hubbard, and Barry Walsh. Seated
are Harold Mills, John Higgins, Wayne Massey, Ed Robertson, Jerry Warren, Bruce
Bartley, Hamp Munsey, and Douglas Sutphin.

AMATEUR RADIO CLUB
The Roanoke Tech Amateur Radio Society is a student organization devoted to improving the radio skills of its members, the advancement of amateur radio, and public service
in time of need. In addition to its bi-weekly business meetings, the Society holds regular
weekly meetings for the instruction of its members in radio theory and code proficiency.
Facilities of the radio shack are also available to members for society-connected activities
during their free time. These activities include anything from a delightful chat via the
club's transceiver with a fellow ham in California,. to building a power supply for one of
the several receivers the club operates.
The officers and members of the Radio Club are as follows: Fred Berger, President;
Dave Kegley, Vice-President; Woody Smith, Secretary-Treasurer; Bud Hogan, Joe Levin,
Glen Diamond, David Moxley, Tommy Mitchell, Peyton Hash, Allen Thomas, Bill Hoffman ,
Bob Faris, David Kinsey, Tom Kanode.
Mr. Thomas L. Overby is the Faculty advisor.

INSTITUTE OF RADIO ENGINEERS
One of the extra-curricular activities available to
Electrical students is membership in the IRE, Student
branch of the Virginia Section. Mr. H. C. Race, who
is the faculty advisor, was instrumental in forming
the group.

CAMERA CLUB
Despite a slow start and handicapped by inexperience, the Camera Club has accomplished a lot--from
organizing and maintaining a darkroom, to furnishing
the photographic work for two publications. Mr. D. E.
