Class History
On September 7, 1945, eighty-one eighth graders crowded in Room 203 in
order to be divided into two sectio ns. Mrs. F. Prun ty and Mrs. Williams were our
homeroom teachers-Mrs. Prunty keeping forty-two of us a nd Mrs. Williams thirtyn1ne.
Of our numb e r at this time, twenty-three were from the Ne wtown- Pinkard
Court-Starkey section; t wenty from Salem; ten from Vinto n; six from Ballyhack; six
from Goodview; four from Hollins; +hree from Brackettow n ; four from Kingstown;
two from Big Hill; two from Catawba; one from Bent Mt.; and one from Franklin
County.
We were a rip-snorting eighth grade-typical of the group whic h is classified
neither as elementary nor as high school st udents. Generally, we we re not too much
interested in sc hool work; rather, we wish e d to " belong " and e xpres sed this desire by
being hol y terrors in every se nse of the wo rd .
However, some of us spent the tim e profitably , for during that year severa l
of us made the honor roll and most of us passed to the ninth grade.
When we returned to sc hool in 1946 our form er teachers greeted us wit h
hopes that we were going t o be quieter, more st udiou s boy s and girl s. Our homeroom teachers were Mrs. Frances Harrison and Mrs. Will iam s. As we formed our
cliques , ou r discovery that man y members of our rank s ha d no t returned to sc hool
dampened our spi rits so mewhat-for we had be e n so pro ud of being th e la rgest
c la ss in the schoo l!
This year we b ec ame ba sketball con sc iou s. Most of us were overs hadowed
by the old e r members of th e teams, but ihose of us who mad e t he squads tri e d hard
to be outsta nding whene ve r we were given a chance. In ad di t io n to our b ei ng fullfledged members of th e sc hool squad s, we were thrilled when both o ur boys ' and
girls' teams won the intramural champ io nship that year. Now c la ss pride began to
exhibit itse lf; we became a wa re of t he nec ess ity to stick to g et he r, work hard, and
prepare for our junior a nd senio r years.
During the sc hool yea r, 1947-48, our hom eroom teache rs we re Mrs. Flossie
West and Mrs. Gladys Saunders. By this time our membersh ip ha d dw indl ed, but we
were still the largest c lass in the school. We worked hard and p layed hard this year.
Our ba sketball p laye rs were recog ni zed as good pl ayers, we participated in e ve ry
activity of th e sc hoo l, and in general we had grown up a b it .
When we re turned to sc hoo l in Sept e mbe r 1948, we met in Roo m 205 whe re
our Co- sponsors, Mrs. Cooke a nd Mr. Pri ce, divided us in to two sect io ns. H owever,
no lo ng er we re we to ~av e se p arate homero o m period s a nd c lass bu si ness was to be
handled by one set o f officers. Thi s wa s our bu siest year. We were conscio us o f
being respon sible for the prom and of the ne e d for fund s for our se ni o r yea r. We
were important me mb ers of t he teams now and Re ba Te rry was e lected c a ptain of
the girls ' squad . We spo nso red pro jects-th e Ch ristm as Tree: th e " Mr. Carver-Miss
Addi so n" W e dding (a pro ject spo nso red jointl y wit h Add iso n H ig h). In Ma y we
spon so red the prom fo r t he seniors, spar ing no troubl e and expense to make it o ne
of the be st in th e hi story of th e sc hool .
Our Seni o r year ha s b ee n one o f mu c h acti v ii y . We have di rected most of
our talents and fun ds to wards oreoara ti o n o f {·he 1950 Annual. We have been acti ve
in athletic s and ha ve b ee n m e ~be.1·s of seve ral organi za ti o ns, in many instances holding
o ffi ces.

We, a c!ass bright and thrifty,
Will do our best to mak e a nam e

Trouble has never wor ri ed us
As we t raveled throug h life's du st ,
By a road that leads us ever o n

W hil e at st ud y with no teacher ne ar,
Our lessons we mastered with conscience c lear ;
Vie never fr etted, pouted or fro wne d
But got ou r le ssons as by dut y bound .
Throu g h old Carver we onward passed,
Shunning neit he r books nor daily class;
But met the m all without a dread
And eac h day found us forging ahead .
The rul es of the sc hoo l have we ever kept,
As we've c limbe d up ward step by step;
Th e wo rd "ca n't " we put away
And left for ot hers to say.
We 've laid as id e "can't" a nd picked up "must."

CLASS SONG
When we speak the sad word farewell
How oft our eyes are bathed with tears:
But "Hope" whispers to each saddened heart
Friendships' golden links will hold through passing years.
Farewell, class mates, farewelL dear school,
Our hearts wi ll often hear the soft refrain
FarewelL farewell, fare we ll, farewell until we meet again.
Though our paths may lead us far apart
But old Carver High will ever bide
We will breathe a prayer to meet again
And our Alma Mater's link will stem each tide.

Athletic History
~THLETICS play a large part in the life of Carver School. We believe
that participation is not o nl y hea lt hful and invigorating but a lso
develop s cooperatio n a nd a se nse of fair play. True sportsmans hip-a combi nation

Th e Senior Cla ss is proud that t he basketba ll teams of 1949-50 included a

The Heart o~ Carver

C)/l I
/IL/ E ARE PRONE to take for granted Mr. Lee, Mrs. Waldron and Mrs. And e rson,
but, if we stop to think for a second thi s wo uld no longer be true .
Of what importan ce is th e quiet gentleman whom we frequentl y see during the day and
who is a lways prese nt at night a ffairs? What wo uld happe n if he should de c ide to take a day
o r two off wit hout warn ing? Mr. Lee is never t oo busy io atte nd to our wants-it is he who
sees t hat we have a wa rm building , who wi ll open do o rs when keys are lost, who will furnish
supplies when we wish to clea n up . Ta ke a loo k at the building at 3 :30 p.m . when we leave
school; the n note the difference at 9 the next morning. It is Mr. Lee who checks the temperat ure of the gym d uring game s and atte mpts to reg ul ate the heat for the be st interests of th e
players. H e is t he o ne who c hecks th e lig hts a nd sees that the building is sec ure ly locked. To
M r. Wa ll ace Lee we wish to ex press o ur appre c iation for his se rv ices and we hope that next
year his wo rk will somehow be made less burden some.
A nd what be ll do we liste n for more anx iou sly than that which signal s " Lun c htim e"? How
wo uld we feel if, upon da shi ng to the cafete ria, we we re inform e d that Mrs. Waldron a nd Mrs.
Anderson had not prepared lu nch? H ow co uld we face th e a ft ernoo n classes without lun c h?
Ws a horrible t hought! We ha ve n't been thou g htful enoug h to t hank these ladi es for th e ir se rvices befo re now, but we wish to say to them that t hey, alo ng with Mr. Le e, are rea lly "The
Heart of Carver " a nd we are glad t hat we ha -1e bee n associa ted wit h them .
To these three persons the Senio rs say " So long " and " Thank s for eve rythi ng! "

As slow our ship her foamy track
Against the wind was cleaving,
Her trembling pennant still look'd back
To that dear isle 'twas leaving.
So loath we part from all we love
From all the links that bind us;
So turn our hearts, as on we rove,
To those we've left behind us .

When round the bowl of vanish'd years
We talk with joyous seemingWith smiles that might as well be tears,
So faint, so sad their beaming;
While memory brings us back again
Each early tie that twined us,
Oh, sweet' s the cup that ci re/es then
To those we've left behind us.

As travellers oft look back at eve
When eastward darkly going,
To gaze upon that light they lea ve
Still faint behind them glowingSo, when the close of pleasure's day
To gloom hath near consign'd us,
We'll turn to catch one fading ray
Of joy that's left behind us.

FOREWORD
As the 1951-52 school year draws to a close, the Second Edition of the Carver
Eagle appears as a land mark. No staff could hope to give in these pages more than
a brief summary of the activities and achievements of years as fruitful as those we
have spent at Carver. But, aided by our faculty, who taught us preparedness, loyalty,
discipline, cooperation, unselfishness, and devotion, the Staff hopes that what is
portrayed here will serve to keep fresh in your minds memories of those wonderful
days that are no more and that this volume will help to link Carver High School's
glorious present with a splendid past and a bright future.

THE ANNUAL STAFF AND SENIOR CLASS AFFECTIONALLY DEDICATE THIS ,
THE 1952 CARVER EAGLE, TO OUR ADVISORS, lv1RS. FLORENCE L. PRUNTY AN D

MR. IRVIN CANNADAY JR., WITH THANKS FOR THEIR COOPERATION AND U N DERSTANDING THROUGH THE YEARS. MANY THANKS TO YOU.

PRINCIPAL

MY WORDS TO YOU
CLASS OF 1 52
As the golden moments of the stream of_ life rush past us, we find ourselves at the dividing point. You walk through the doors of Carver into a world
of many doors. Today, more doors of opportunity are opening for you. My
friendly advice is for you to be ready for your opportunity when it comes.
I give my humble thanks that destiny played its part in my life through the
passing years in the shaping of your educational experiences. But, the shaping
of your li ve s will be your work. It can be a thing of beauty, or, a thing of
shame; for you lay the corner, and add joint to joint, you give the porportion,
you set the finish.
Allow not a single day to pass without increasing the treasure of knowledge.
Remember, Seniors, that knowledge with understanding and common sense, is
wisdom; with method, it is power; with charity, it is beneficence; with religion,
it is virtue and life and p ea c e.
Therefore, Class of 1952, it is my sincere wish that your lives be as
beautiful as the world our God created. The highest attainment is to be able
at all times and in all things to say, "Thy will be done."
Farewell Seniors -go forth and keep ever l asting faith .

Leaving Carver in Nineteen Hundred Fifty-Two
We the Senior Class leave joy for you.
We did our best to make a name;
In your memory we hope to remain.
In our struggles and troubles we never worried,

Our trials and tribulations we always buried.
May the road of righteousness lead us ever on
In this world where opportiuiity and freedom was born.
Our willing teachers were always near
To lend us a hand with kindness and cheer;
Our kind principal could always understand
And often came up with a helpful plan.
The rules of the school we always obey
Aware that they help us day by day.
Bad language and slang our class put away
Because we think it's not for a student to say.
We never say, "Can't"; there's no such word,
We just try and try until our prayers are heard.
That's why we have such great success ;
We know ourselves, but others know us best.
Keep up old Carver with opportunity for all,
Give our praises to the large and small .
To our dear teachers we say "Good-bye",
Fond memories of you will never die.
Although it's now time to say farewell
In our hearts Carver will a lways -dwell .
In memories we're sure to sigh

When we think of the day we said, "Good bye . "
Our final words have now been spoken ,
Our aching hearts are broken.
With tears in our eyes we leave old C . H . S .
We're proud to say we've done our best !

CLASS SONG
Oh, Carver High School, we love you so,
We hate to leave you, but we must go.
So cheer up and wear a smile,
For our old shadow should last a while.
And our advisors we love so dear,
They tried to guide us when they were near,
So help us to reach our goal
That we may travel a higher road.
Oh, Carver High School, we love you truly
Though in our early years we were unruly
So now, we leave our hearts
Much pain besets us, for we must part.

CLASS HISTORY
The great day of September 7, 1947 arrived and forty-three eighth
graders from different sections of the county found their way to Room
203 to be divided into two sections. Mrs. Florence Prunty and Mrs.
Janie Williams were our homeroom advisors with Mrs. Williams taking
twenty-one of us in her 8th B section, while Mrs. Prunty kept twentytwo in her 8th.A section.
The fact that we were a very loud and active class caused some
people to think that we would stay that way for the rest of our four high
· school years. But we were mostly interested in seeing just how high
school life was.
In June all of us passed with just three dropping out of school.
When school opened in September 1948, we were divided again into
two sections, the 9th A and the 9th B with Mr. William Greene and Mrs.
Prunty as our ad vis ors. During this year we became more reserved
because we were then officially in high school. To show our progress
we gave a grand Freshman Banquet that our girls prepared themselves.
This year brought us other fame, for Juber Preston won the Mister
Carver contest and our freshman boys were the champions of the school
Intra-Mural Tournament.
Our sophcanore year began with the same advisors but a much smaller enrollment. In spite of this, we worked hard because we knew we had
to sponsor many social activities the next year. Edith Wiley brought us
praise by winning the "Miss Bobby Sox Contest" and many of our boys
became basketball conscious.
Our Junior year began with a new president, Arthur Preston, a
veteran, who headed our class with much determination. We also had
a new advisor, Mr. J. T. Mason, who assisted Mrs. Prunty and our
class with plans for the Junior-Senior Prom, May King-Queen Contest,
Teachers' Popularity Contest, and other social affairs which proved to
be quite successful. Along with these we presented our Junior Play,
"The House of A Thousand Thrills" which we enjoyed producing.
We were really proud this year because members of our class were
star athletes, trainers, and managers of both girls' and boys' basketball teams, and Juber Preston was captain of the boys' team. Again
our boys were champions of the school Intra Mural Tournament.
Although our class has dwindled to twenty-one, we have had a very
successful senior year with a new class advisor, Mr . Irvin Cannaday ,
who has ably assisted Mrs. Prunty and the class in devoting time and
efforts to the 1952 Carver "Eagle" which we hope will bring Carver
pride. We have been active in all the extra-curricular activities and
have held offices in a number of them .
