we went to wor~ to find the central loc~tft.on a.nd
f'tmds to build a high school.
·
A committee was appointed by the State Board
of Education in the spring of 1934 to make an
investigation as to the needs and location of a
school in this section of Botetourt County. The
work of this committee resulted in a decision on
the present location, a five-acre lot which could
be purohased for $1750. The County School Bo8rd
approved the choice and asserted its willingness
to pay $1000 if the community would pay the balance.
Due to lack of funds we were unable to start
the new building until 1938, when a grant of 45%
of the oost of the building was secured from the
Federal government. We were very fortunate in
having Mr . H. E. Weeks, a member of the Board of
Supervisors in · this section on our committee to
help us secur~ funds f or this project.
We had many pleasant meetings together as a
committee , but we trere s addened by the death of
one of the memb ers, Mr . W. P. Dooley, whose place
vras filled by Mr. Leiivis c. i.i'J'ilkes. As. a committee
we are very grateful f or the cooperation of the
people and the boards of our county for our

splendid Colonial High School.
The students uere asked to name the school'
and their unaninlous ~hoice was Colonial. The
building was dedicated on August 30, 1939. The
dedicatory address was delivered by the late
E. Lee Trinkle, Ex-governor of Virginia.

CL AS S P R 0 P HE CY
At the close of a very hot dny in the month of May 1940, I wns very tired
from the rush of senior examinations and the· multitude of ciuties associated
with our graduation. I fell across the bed ~in my room and very soon I was in
the land of dreams. I seemed to be awnke nnd in the fa,r_ dis·tant" bi ty of Los
Angele s, attending the National Education Association. While there I met
Janie Scaggs , a former school teacher in Colonial High. It WM iin the year
, 1950. In my drerun I asked her about my cla.ssmo.tes of 1940. ~From her I
obtained some interesting fo.cts.
·~
I leo.rned that ·Ho.rvey Ado.ms is nov1 the judge of the Blue Ridge ~irouit Court,
nnd that he recently gave Mr. Coffman thirty dnys for 8riving up· Grub Hollow
Boul evn~d under the influence of intoxicating liquors.
Pnul Foster wns removed from the Boo.rd of Deacons of ~e . Glade Creek Bnptist
Church when he tried to persuade tho ministe:f-s wifo to ·got o. divorce a.nd :mo.rry
him.

To my surprd:eo I lco.rncd tha.t Mr. nnd Hrs. Do.llo.s ~pioko.rd (F.'Irs. Spickard being
the former Inez Leonard) took advantage of Mussolini's colonization plan and
• moved to Ethopia.. When last heard from . they e.nd their 13 kids were vre1i,. ho.ppy • .
The Second ·World Wa.r almost extinguished the people in Europe; so Cho.rles Wnde
the distinguished Blue Ridge scientest, hns gone to the jungles to persuade
'
the monkeys to sto.rt evolution over o.g::.in.
'
.
She said that Joe Wilkes ha.d just beon r~ lc o. sed f~om the hospital because of
henrt trouble. He wns j i l tcd by the woll knovm model, Ruth Cooper.
Linwood Clement's collcco degree of Ph. D. did not o.vo.il him much.

He is now

a. shovel lea.ner on tho 17PA.
Many e. man has lost his life a.t the hands of Delma Haymaker.

tricity to the electric chair at Si ng Sing Prison.

She feeds elec.
How perfectly shocking.

.

And speaking of prisons, Lillian Wilkes is chief cook at Alcratraz, where
Mickey is residing. Both boa.rd a. t the gove rnrnent 1· s expense.
~

I was perfectly bowled over to learn that Dorothy ·Patton has gained weight and
is a regular patron at the Dorothy Clement · R0ducing Salon in Blue Ridge .
Ruth eooper who used to model clothing ho.:m' t time for modeling since the
triplets came.
Sylvia Scanlon, dressod in men's clothing, has gone to Hollyv1ood to plny in
"The Life of Fatty Arbuckle."

FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY
Our Freshman class this year is a combination
of students from Layme.ntovvn and Blue Ridge Schools.
With our new school and as unacquinted with
each other as we were, i t seemed as though we were
out of our usual place. However, now we have
associated with each other so much until we feel
that we are one class rather than two.
Very few of us had played basketball before
coming to this school. Under the direction of our
teacher, Miss Mary Neeley Rosebro, the Freshman girls
who wanted to play basketball organized a team of
their own. Although unsuccessful in the class games,
we hope to have a better team next year.
Vfith one exception, the second team of the boys'
basketball squad was compos ed of freshmen. Although
the boys were not successful in class games this
ye~r , watch out, because we are coming back strong
next year.
·
The Freshmen gave an as sembly program in December
on the subj ect of Christmas. Yife gave another in the
spring a bout 11 Book Week. 11
Doris Le e Murray , a Freshman girl, won the
rating of 11 excellentn at the County Music Festival
at Eagle Rock High School.
At an a.rruatenr pr0gram held at t he school May 17,
Doris Lee l!llurray y ,<t s the beaut-J representative of
the Fr eshman cla ss. l:n the saJne program, Doris Lee
and Jack Lucas won th~ duet con~ e st.
There are t en Fr cshinen in the Base.ba.11 Club,
tvventy- one in the Hobby Club, a.nd sixteen in the
Glee Club. We also have five freshmen be longing
to the 4-H Club and four of our boys a r e members
of the sch ool safety pa.trol system.
We have made many fri ends in the past year
ond hope to be abl e to ma.ke many mor e i n tho years
to come.

GIRLS BASKETBALL HISTORY
The · g1~ls basketball team -difil vetj." well
considering that this was the first year that
we have played at Colonial High.School. We
have great prospects for a much better team
in 1941.
The team will miss Delma Ha:Yma.ker, Lillian
Wilkes, Josephtne Jeter, and Ruth Cooper, who
are graduating this year.
The team as a whole wishes to extend their
thanks to their coach, Miss Mary Neely Rosebro
for her very capable guidance during this season.
Mabel Zimmerman was high scorer, having made
77 points during the season. ~furiel Thompson
was second with 66 points to her credit. The
total number of points scored for Colonial
during the entire season were 235.
