Message to Graduating Class
You, the graduat~s of the class of 1965, are a privileged group. You
are fortunate in that you have completed the immediate course of endeavor on which you embarked three years ago. You are privileged in
that you have had the good fortune of association with a dedicated faculty
and professional organization of physicians, nurses and other Felated groups.
Above all, however, you are privileged in that you join a select company
of graduate professional nurses whose lives are dedicated to that high
and noble purpose of providing comfort and professional care to the sick.
The image of nursing is held in the highest regard in the hearts and
minds of men. Upon you and your peers resn the future of this great professional tradition.

Class of '65 Salutes Miss Duncan
Three years ago we entered Lewis-Gale Ho pital School of Nursing with a
desire to learn, the will to work and the hope that at the end of our program we
would earn the right to be called NURSE. Our years have been happy ones, although often we have complained as the growing pains of adulthood were felt.
As we review our lives as students, many experiences and many people drift
before us. Each experience and each person has made their own special impre.sion
upon our young lives.
To you, Miss Duncan, we would like to give a special thank you. You have
been our Director and our friend. You have been our IDEAL.

Looking back, we the Class of 1965 remember:
Our preclinical months of studying and
hoping for caps were rewarded when twentyeight of us were capped on March 17, 1963,
at Greene Memorial Methodist Church. We
were on our way to becoming professional
nurses.
As our freshman year ended, all of us
received our junior stripes. This year we
were split into smaller groups for special
classes.
Now .we are seniors, numbering twentytwo, finishing various courses to prepare us
for graduation. With dances, parties, romances, diamonds, and weddings, our
three years have not been ones of all work
and no play.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Dr. G. Gooch, Sponsor;
Mrs. M. Snedegar, Advisor; Dr. R. Fisher,
Sponsor.
Looking forward, we the Class of 1965 know:
There will be many opportunities open tu us
to further our education in nursing.
Challe~ges will await us, which we must
meet as best we can.
June 11, 1965, is the day that looms brightest in our near future . for this is our graduation
day . This day we will reach the ultimate goal
of our stay at Lewis-Gale Hospital. After
graduation we will take our places in society as
professional nurses.

Now we are Juniors, and it is hardly believable
that so much time has gone by. It seems like only
. yesterday that, as Freshmen, we were going to
Roanoke College for our science classes or walking
to Jefferson for psychology, foundations, and sociology classes. Our class projects, selling stationery
and doughnuts, are about the same projects as during our freshman year but classes and work are different.
September of 1964 marked the beginning of our
Junior year and also the grouping of the class into
four groups. Each group rotated in Medical-Surgical nursing (which included our affiliation in Tuberculosis nursing at Catawba), Psychiatric nursing,
and other clinical specialties throughout the year.
We approach our senior year, we hope to apply
ourselve s more thoughtfully and dedicatedly to our
profession.

MRS. BETTY JO CARTER.

On Labor Day, September 7, 1964,
twenty-four freshmen were delivered
to the dorms of Lewis-Gale. These
girls combined with the new freshmen
of the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing will be the second graduating class
of the Community Hospital of Roanoke
Valley. After Labor Day, our labors
commenced; first of all, in the form
of orientation to our new courses. The

ming course at the "Y" which taught us
Graham, Vice-President; D. Wright, Treasurer;

THIRD ROW: J. Harris, Historian; s. Landers, His to Jefferson for classes. We will never
tori an.
forget our experiences at Roanoke College, such as working with our delightful cats and the great amount of "knowledge and skill"
we gained from our Chemistry course.
There were not only classes to keep us busy, but also many extracurricular activities including cheerleading practices, basketball games, Glee Club performances, and Vesper Club
meetings.
Since the beginning of our dorm life together, the class members have developed many
close friendships . It took us quite C!While to accept the idea of "lights out at 11:00 p. m. ,"
but we now see its value.
The second semester brought new courses and our first clinical experiences. Now we are
anxiously awaiting June 13, 1965 - the day of capping.

Student Government
Encourages Citizenship
!he students of Lewis-Gale Hospital School
of Nursing have practiced self-government since
1956. Through the Student Nurses' Association,
we develop personal maturity through group effort, gain knowledge of organizational structure,
and develop the ability to assume the role of a
responsible citizen. Upon signing the Honor
Pledge, a student becomes a member of this
organization and is responsible for upholding
its rules and regulations and maintaining the
standards of our profession.
Through membership in the Lewis-Gale Student Nurses' Association the student is entitled
to membership in the district, state and national organizations.

Stimulates an
Understanding of
the Honor Code
The Honor Council was established
in 1964 as a standing committee of
the Student Council. The members
are selected by the students and serve
for a period of six months.
The purpose of the Honor Council
is to promote a constant awareness of
the meaning of the Honor Code and to
enforce the rules and regulations as
stated in the Handbook.
The Honor Council functions as the
judicial branch of the student government.

Members of Honor Council are P.

an opportunity to learn the management of a publication and an opportunity to express her ideas and
opinions creatively in writing.
The Breeze serves as a means of informal communication between the students, hospital personnel,
faculty, and others. News is collected from each
department by the reporters who highlight the feature events of each month. The last edition of The

The Lewis-Gale Glee Club was organi zed in
1956 to provide an opportunity for students to develop their interests in music. Being a part of such
an organization provides the student with a knowledge and appreciation of music, opportunities to
visit and sing for various community groups, and a
di version from studies and clinical experience.
Some of the performances during the year included singing for: the Beta Sigma Phi convention,
a Christmas program over Profile on WSLS, the
Men's Sunday S~hool Department at Calvary Baptist Church, Capping and Graduation exercises.
Forty-two students and one graduate nurse participated in these programs.
In anticipation of our merger with the Jefferson
Hospital School of Nursing into the CHRV School
of Nursing, this year the spring concert included
members from the Glee Clubs of both schools. The
theme of the spring concert was a musical salute to

The Vesper Club, organized in 1954, is an inter-denominational religious organization which encourages each
student to participate in worship services.
It offers each nursing student an opportunity for spiritual growth and for acquiring
a sense of spiritual unity with
her fellow students.
Since the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley
School of Nursing is now a
reality, our students and those
from Jefferson Hospital School
of Nursing have merged their
religious organizations. This
merger resulted in noticeably
increased membership and
fellowship.

Remembering the wrongs you sometimes do;

And practice patience, such a pleasing virtue
Although you feel you'd much more rather shout;

And feel so tired - you can't remember when,

Service

RIGHT TO LEFT: Dr. Augusto Tesoro, Dr. Khalid Mahmood, Dr. John Palkot,
Dr. Martin Judy, Dr. Viagio Colucci

Who is on the house? Page Dr • . . ? How many times
each day are these questions asked? Our interns devote
many hours to the service of the patients. Not only do they
care for patients in the emergency room but also work with
each doctor's patients while on separate rotation.
Our interns, on occasion, lecture students. Some have
served as coaches of the student basketball teams and are avid
supporters.

Dr. Judy gives final instructions to K. White, Co-Captain of the basketball team.
Shoot! Shoot!
Yells Dr. Tesoro.

M. Black and M. Moellar assist
Dr. Mahmood in the Emergency Room.
