Title

SR083 High Street

Description

Salem’s first major population and economic boom occurred between 1880 and 1890 with the development of the railroad. The population during that decade nearly doubled. The Roanoke Collegian reported in 1891, “Building continues, High Street is being graded and widened, the streets are brilliant with electric lights, the laying of sewer pipes is being pursued vigorously.” This card depicts the many improvements made to High Street during that time.
