Virginia Y. Lee Collection Dedication
Description
This collection consists of audio, photographs, and a digitized program from the dedication of the Virginia Y. Lee Collection at the Gainsboro Branch Library on 26 September 1982.
The collection was dedicated to Virginia Y. Lee due to her significant contributions as the fourth librarian of the Gainsboro Branch. A significant portion of the collection contains materials she collected, and it even contains materials that she hid in the basement.
The Virginia Y. Lee Collection still resides at the Gainsboro Branch Library, and it is continuously added to under the guidance of library staff. The Collection is the largest collection of Black studies books in Southwest Virginia.
The Virginia Y. Lee Collection reflects the historical, political, cultural, and economic experience of people of African ancestry living in the United States, with special emphasis on the history of Virginia and, in particular, the Roanoke Valley. Materials of exceptional rarity, provenance, or scholarly value, including but not limited to pre-1975 imprints, limited print runs, signed copies, and first editions receive prioritized consideration for inclusion in the special collection.
Photographs are housed in Gainsboro Photography Collection.
