Description
Sign on left that says “Cornmeal $1.25… Cornmeal $3.00…lb. Grits $1.50… Buckwheat $3.00” Next to it on the right is a sign that says “Grist Mill. The two grist mills before you are operated by power from the water wheel, much as they did in the days of Ed Mabry. One mill ground coarse gains, or “chop” for stock feed, and the other ground corn meal for household use. The customer stood on the mill platform above and poured his grain into a hopper, from which it fed between the rotating stones. The miller controlled the space between the stones with a lever to obtain the proper texture of meal or flour. “Water-ground” corn meal is still considered a special treat to many people.” With detailed picture of machine. Date on back is 18 August 1992.
