Title

A Guide to the Papers of the Gainsboro Road Expansion Project

Description

The Gainsboro Road Expansion Project is a project that started in 1985 to expand the Second Street NW / Gainsboro Road NW corridor to create a four-lane road connecting Orange Avenue NW to Salem Avenue SW, the realignment of Wells Avenue NW, and also creating the bridge over Shenandoah Avenue NW in Roanoke, Virginia. To acquire land for this project, imminent domain was used for the land and homes of Gainsboro residents. The City Planning Department, alongside Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and Mattern and Craig Engineers and Surveyors, completed environmental assessments in order to evaluate real estate at a lower price. There was considerable opposition from neighborhood residents for this project. This collection houses documents that state this as well as lists of the people they were contacting for their property.
