Description

"The late David A. Ramey captured images of life in Roanoke, many from memory. In images such as this one, he focused on the vibrant Gainsboro neighborhood, much lost to urban renewal efforts of the 1960s. Mr. Ramey's writing captures the spirit of a community of people who welcomed and supported each other."

This image depicts Henry Street at the intersection with Centre Avenue. The 1st Street Bridge is featured in the center of the image. To the far left of the image, there is the Virginia Theatre, North Carolina Mutual, and Kaiser Record Store. The Norfolk and Western Railway can be seen off to the right of the image, as well as a glimpse into Downtown Roanoke. In the top left corner the artist wrote, "Henry Street Bridge By David A. Ramey 2007 A Happy Place".

On loan from the estate of David A. Ramey.
